Nutrient deficiencies can worsen or be an underlying cause of depression.  You may have noticed all of the research articles this year about the gut – brain connection.  If bacteria in your digestive system can influence your brain health, how can we support the gut in a way that also supports the brain?

Eating Well
It’s not news that eating well makes you feel well.  But what does that really mean?  With all of the conflicting information about “healthy” foods, what exactly does eating well even mean anymore?  Does it mean Paleo or Raw, juicing with the pulp in or out, apple cider vinegar or gluten free?

The bad news is, it’s not that easy.  The good news is, if those diets didn’t work for you, it’s not because of the effort you put in.  How each of our bodies (and minds!) process food is individualized and unique.  It depends on a variety of factors and can be different when you are 25 compared to 35.  It can vary when you are stressed for a period of time vs. when you are on vacation.

You know what makes you feel good, what gives you energy, what makes your stomach cramp up.  Intuition and listening carefully to your body.  Now that’s a diet / lifestyle plan that has real potential!

Magnesium and Omega 3s
We’ve found that often, patients experiencing depression can benefit from magnesium and omega 3s being added to their diet.  Although a magnesium or omega 3 deficiency may not be the cause of the depression, it’s likely to worsen all of the symptoms.

If you are experiencing depression, it can be difficult to understand what your body needs from your food.  Sometimes, you may not even feel like eating.  Or the opposite, you may find yourself binging.  It can be very difficult to break out of these depression / food cycles without support.

Adding in a high quality supplement or IV Nutritional Therapy sessions may be just the boost you need.

Is it a rough patch or is it depression?
Beyond feeling sad or going through a rough time, depression is a symptom in itself that may greatly lower your quality of life.  It’s a state of mental health that should be taken seriously.  It’s also a mood disorder that has a deep impact on daily life.

We also know how difficult it is to seek out help or start a program when you feel so tired and run down that simply getting out of bed is difficult.  That’s where a boost in magnesium and omega 3s can really help.  For some patients who are struggling with depression, this nutritional boost helps to clear the fog of depression just enough so that they can make the next move towards better health.

Natural Alternatives to Antidepressant Drugs
Prescription medications for depression come with a long list of side effects.  At Wholeness Center, we understand and support the need for prescription medications at times.  However, we don’t believe that antidepressants should be a lifelong choice in most cases.  Many of the side effects take a toll on the quality of life.

We advocate for natural alternatives and lifestyle changes and we offer the support our patients need to make those changes last.
