Our team at the Wholeness Center firmly believes that our  mental health (children and adults) goes far beyond labels and medications.  A diagnosis and a prescription is the quick cover up for the complicated symptoms presented by ADHD.  We’re not interested in quick cover ups.  We’re here to treat the whole person, the whole child, with options that look deeply into the root cause of behaviors and symptoms.

ADHD, Depression, and Anxiety is on the rise, why?
Children, teens, and adults can’t focus.  Many of us, our neighbors, our community members, are depressed.  Teenagers are facing chronic anxiety.  Are generations being born with brain chemistry problems?  Is ADHD the new normal?

We’ve read statistics that are stating 1 in 10 children in the U.S. has ADHD.  In fact, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is showing a 67% increase from 1997 to 2016.  It’s been a slow progression and is causing a lot of concern.  Is the rise due to more awareness?  More health care access?  Better screenings for children?  Possibly.

Maybe it’s just a quick and convenient diagnosis for a variety of symptoms including depression or anxiety.  Many pediatricians and general practitioners are offering up this diagnosis after only a 10 to 15 minute evaluation with their patient.  Our Wholeness Center team agrees with other psychiatry professionals that observations and assessments take time and are difficult.  So, there’s a strong possibility that ADHD is being over diagnosed and patients are being overmedicated.

What is ADHD?
ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, has become one of the common mental health conditions for children over the past two decades.  ADHD shows itself differently for each person.  Generally, it’s thought to appear as hyperactivity.  Other symptoms are:

  • Difficultly with details
  • Making repetitive mistakes
  • Not following through with instructions
  • Difficulty organizing
  • Easily distracted
  • Forgetful
  • Fidgeting or tapping
  • Difficulty staying seated
  • Restless
  • Unable to enjoy relaxing leisure activities
  • Excessive talking
  • Answering questions before they are completed
  • Often interrupts

It’s important to note that the above symptoms would need to be chronic and seen often in a variety of settings to be considered ADHD.  It’s also important to note that depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and learning disabilities can have crossover symptoms with ADHD.  It’s easy to misdiagnose.

It is believed that ADHD is caused by both genetic and environmental factors.  However, ADHD research is ongoing and the cause is not known.

Do you offer alternatives to Adderall, antidepressants, and stimulants for ADHD treatment?

Yes and no.  Naturopathic medicine isn’t about replacing prescription medications with herbal supplements, it’s about understanding and healing.  Our alternative, holistic treatments for ADHD are fined tuned to each individual and are focused on long-term quality of life benefits.  Dr. Scott Shannon explains:

how does acupuncture workAcupuncture is a 3,500-year-old healing technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organizations (WHO) as well as numerous universities have documented and publicized acupuncture’s safety and efficacy for treating a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture enjoys a great reputation for treating pain of all sorts, ranging from back and neck pain, joint pain, headaches, neurological issues, menstrual pain, and more.  In addition, acupuncture is used to regulate the body’s functionality and thereby can help support other treatments for a multitude of health issues.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites-commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other acupoint stimulation techniques include: manual massage, moxibustion or heat therapy, cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments.

natural anxiety remediesAnxiety is a natural physiologic response to stress. Everyone experiences differing levels of anxiety but it’s considered to be a problem or a disorder when these feelings do not go away. Different types of anxiety range from general anxiety which includes difficulty thinking, irritability, and panic disorder with attacks of fear, to social anxiety. Constant anxiety can lead to physical symptoms including difficulty sleeping, abdominal pain, digestive issues and hormone imbalances including thyroid dysfunction.

If you have concerns about your anxiety it’s best to be evaluated by a mental health professional. You can additionally treat and lessen anxiety naturally by following certain dietary and nutritional supplemental changes at home.
