constipation remedies for kidsWhat is “constipation”? Everyone seems to have a different idea of what constipation means and there are many different “norms”. Infants can have a bowel movement after every feeding. Babies that are breastfed tend to have fewer bowel movements because they absorb most of mom’s milk so there is less to poop out. Children under 2 years old typically have 2-4 bowel movements per day. And at about the age of 4 children can have 1 bowel movement per day. 

Constipation can be caused by lack of fluid, diet, medications, and other physical conditions. Constipation can also develop during potty training when children begin to associate bowel movements with pain, creating a cycle.  It is first important to determine the cause of constipation, including the rule-out of physical reasons, before proceeding with treatment.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites-commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other acupoint stimulation techniques include: manual massage, moxibustion or heat therapy, cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments.

Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit word “Ayur” meaning life and “Veda” meaning wisdom or knowledge.  Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depends on a delicate balance between your body, mind and spirit and the universe.  According to Ayurvedic theory, everything in the universe is connected and a disruption of this harmony can lead to poor health and illness. Some things that can cause disruptions of your balance include genetic or birth defects, injuries, climate or seasonal changes, age, emotions, food, elimination processes and stress.

Ayurveda recognizes that each person if made of a combination of five basic elements found in the universe: Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

probiotics for healthDid you know that Probiotics can help your mood?

For thousands of years, clinicians have observed a connection between the gut, brain, and overall health. Hippocrates is famously quoted as saying “all disease begins in the gut.” This should not come as a surprise to anyone who has ever experienced gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms like diarrhea, indigestion, or abdominal discomfort in response to changes in their emotional state. The gut and brain communicate through neural, endocrine and immune pathways. It has become increasingly clear that interactions with intestinal microbiota play an important part in this communication.

Recent insights into the role of the human microbiota in cognitive and affective functioning have led to the hypothesis that probiotic supplementation may act as an adjuvant strategy to ameliorate or prevent depression.  In a recent research study (Reference below), 20 healthy participants without current mood disorder received a 4-week probiotic food-supplement intervention, while 20 control participants received an inert placebo for the same period. In the pre- and post-intervention assessment, cognitive reactivity to sad mood was assessed using the revised Leiden index of depression sensitivity scale. It was exciting to see that the participants who received the 4-week multispecies probiotics intervention showed significantly reduced depression, less repetitive negative thoughts and less aggressive thoughts. Yeah probiotics!
