Use of Antibiotics early in life can reportedly lead to immune-related diseases. In animal studies it has been shown that antibiotics change the intestinal microbiomes and reduce the diversity of bugs. The long term effects are unknown. The antibiotics they studied includes the macrolide family: Azithromycin, Clarithromycin.

The average child living in the United States will receive about 10-20 rounds of antibiotics by the age of 18.

The research indicates that it takes at least ONE YEAR for the intestinal microbiota to recover from antibiotic treatment, and if the child receives multiple courses of antibiotics during their first years, it may not have time to fully recover.
